Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), a leading Japanese shipping company, announced on April 22 its decision to outfit its LR1 product tanker, Nexus Victoria, with the filtree system, an onboard CO2 capture system coupled with a SOx scrubber.

This initiative is the first commercial installation of a CO2 capture system onboard a vessel by a Japanese operator, MOL said. The system is slated for installation around the end of 2024.

Manufactured by Value Maritime, a Dutch emission-reducing technology company, the filtree system features a dual-functionality design. It includes a scrubber function capable of removing 99% of sulfur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter (PM) from exhaust gases, as well as a carbon capture and storage (CCS) function that separates and recovers up to 10% of CO2 emissions from exhaust gases.

The CO2 capture process involves the adsorption and capture of CO2 by reacting with a specialized chemical substance onboard the vessel. The captured CO2 will then be discharged ashore for further processing. The heat-separated CO2 can subsequently be supplied to greenhouses, synthetic fuel companies, and other end-users, contributing to a sustainable and circular economy.
